History
The BMW F650 series marked a major step for BMW Motorrad, debuting in 1993 with the F650 "Funduro" and F650St Strada. They were BMW’s first single-cylinder motorcycles since the 1960s and marked a return to chain drive. The early models were a result of a collaboration with Aprilia, using a Rotax 652cc engine and assembled in Italy.
In 2000, the F650 was succeeded by the F650GS, made in Germany. The GS (Gelände/Straße—off-road/on-road) was a genuine dual-sport machine. Its reputation for reliability, versatility, and easy handling made it a favorite among commuters, travellers, and new riders.
Over time, the F650GS evolved, with the introduction of versions like the more offroad-capable F650GS Dakar and the street-focused F650CS Scarver. In 2008, the “F650GS” name was controversially reused on a parallel-twin 798cc motorcycle, blurring the line between the single and twin-cylinder bikes in the GS lineup.
